Doberman Breed Standard

Doberman Breed Standard

From the history of the breed:
Doberman - is a quite young dog breed. Its formation began in the middle of the 19th century. Friedrich Louis Dobermann, the brilliant self-taught breeder from the city Apolda (Thuringia, Germany) was breeding these dogs for about twenty-five years. It should be mentioned that the Doberman breed - is the only dog that bears its founder's name. Country of origin:
Germany.
General appearance:
Doberman is a sturdy, brave dog, who has lively temperament and strongly expressed defensive reaction. His movements are light, elastic; the step is free, wide, with a good emission of the forequarters and with powerful push of hindquarters.
Height and weight:
Height at the withers for males should reach 26-28 inches (68-72 cm); females - 24-26 inches (63-68 cm).
Weight: males - 88-99 lb (40-45 kg), females - 70-77 lb (32-35 kg).

Format:
Nearly square.
Coat:
Short, straight, close-lying, rigid, without undercoat.
Color:
The color is black or brown, with rust red clearly defined and clean markings. Markings on the muzzle are located as spots on the cheeks and the top of the eyebrow; on the throat, forechest, on the metacarpus, metatarsus and feet, on the inside of the back thigh, on the paws and below the tail.
Head:
Not too long and not too narrow at the top.
Ears:
The ears, which are set high, are carried erect and cropped to a length in proportion to the head. In countries where cropping is not permitted the uncropped ears are equally recognised. (Medium size preferred and with the front edge lying close to the cheeks).
Teeth:
Well-developed and tightly closed. Jaws are long, but not peaked.

Neck:
Dry, long, muscular, high set. Its outline rises gradually and is softly curved.
Body:
The back should be slightly sloping, short, strong and broad. The back and the loin section are of good width and well-muscled.
Chest:
Oval, long, moderately wide and particularly emphasized, convex front (forbrust). Length and depth of chest must be in the right proportion to the body length. The depth with slightly arched ribs should be approximately 50% of the height of the dog at the withers.
Tail:
It is set high and docked short whereby approximately two-three tail vertebrae remain visible. If the tail is undocked, it is of the average length; when the dog at rest it is omitted, when excited it is rosen to the backline.
Belly:
Slightly tucked up.
Limbs:
The front legs as seen from all sides are almost straight, vertical to the ground and strongly developed. When seen from the back the Dobermann looks, because of his well-developed pelvic muscles in hips and croup, wide and rounded off. The muscles running from the pelvis towards the upper and lower thigh result in good width, as well as in the top thigh area, knee joint area and lower thigh. The strong hind legs are straight and stand parallel.

Attractive features:
These dogs can adapt to life in the city, if you provide them with sufficient loads aimed to develop intelligence and physical strength. Dobermans require minimal care; thanks to their short and smooth coat combing once a week will be enough. Dobermans get used to communicate with people from an early age, and further become beautiful pets. Nevertheless, most of them recognize only one owner. They are good in playing with children, if they grow along with them. In addition, these dogs are very active.
Doberman is the perfect companion for an experienced and physically active owner.
